Cathie James-Robinson
What is your medium?
I have spent my life creating art, from technical drawing and graphic design to fine arts working in all types of media, including painting (with watercolor, acrylic and soft pastels), drawing (graphite, color pencils and ink), sculpture (with clay, both additive and subtractive, assembling with wire or other materials), collage, assemblage and fine art photography. My mixed media art has been created using my own original paintings, photographs and drawings. The repeated ink drawings and photographs used in the art have been reproduced from my originals and applied by hand with unique transfer techniques.
So you can see, when I am asked, what is your medium, it is not a short answer. I want to do it all!
Originally a self-taught artist, I decided to attend American River College full time in 2008 where I discovered an amazing and talented faculty in the Art and Photography departments. It was there that I received degrees in Art and Art New Media as well as the Certificate in Freelance Photography. During my time at ARC, I was published twice in the national award-winning American River Magazine, as well as participating in numerous student exhibits, winning Best 2-D in show for my pastel, “Moody Mountain View”. After soaking up all of the knowledge and processes I could and honing my skills, I became increasingly interested in combining my fine art, photography and assemblage into single mixed media art pieces.
Formerly known as Cathie Bechtell, a resident of the Foothills of El Dorado County for 35 years, I have lived in Davis, California since 2015 and have fallen in love with the lifestyle and art community. Since residing in Davis, my art has been included in a number of group shows. In addition, I have shown my work in several solo 2nd Friday ArtAbout locations. In January, 2018 I had a solo show of my mixed media art at Gallery 1855 as well as having one of my mixed media pieces featured on the cover of the Davis Dirt magazine. I also have spent the past 4 years working in clay at the Davis Arts Center.
My latest big news:
As of March 2020, I have a studio located near the UC Davis Arboretum which has allowed me to focus on painting and sculpting in clay. My studio is part of a group of 11 talented artists called Arboretum Art Works. Working independently in our own studios, we also plan to participate in the monthly 2nd Friday ArtAbout events, studio tours and shows in Davis, California.
I am also very excited to announce that in September 2020, I was selected to be a member of The Artery, an art cooperative store at 207 G Street in Davis, which allows me to display and sell my work.
My latest honor:
My original painting "Up Close" has been accepted to the 2021 KVIE Art Auction (which airs on the PBS TV channel Oct. 1, 2 & 3). My piece has also been selected by the Art Auction Jurors to receive a Juror's award and to be published on the cover of INSIDE Sacramento Magazine!
